La Tanzanita és la varietat blava i violeta de la Zoisita (del grup Epidota). Aquesta pedra va ser descoberta al nord de Tanzània l'any 1967. La curiositat és que la Tanzanita només es troba a Tanzània, en una zona minera molt petita, i aquesta és una de les raons que la fan especial i rara. També té un tricroisme molt fort, que alterna blau, violeta i bordeus segons l'orientació del cristall.
El nom de "Tanzanita" li va ser donat per Tiffany & Co el 1968. El departament de màrqueting de Tiffany pensava que el nom científic de "zoisita blau-violeta" no era prou atraient per al consumidor i, inspirats en el seu país d'origen, Tanzània, van introduir aquesta pedra al mercat com a Tanzanita. L'any 2002, l'American Gem Trade Association escollia la Tanzanita com a pedra natal de desembre al costat del Zircó blau i la Turquesa.
Un estudi independent del 2012 suggereix que, per la seva raresa i la petita àrea de mina on es pot trobar, els dipòsits de Tanzanita es poden esgotar en 30 anys.

Tanzanite is the blue and violet variety of Zoisite (from Epidote group). The gemstone was discovered in Northern Tanzania in 1967. The curiosity is that Tanzanite is only found in Tanzania, in a very small mining area, and this is one of the reasons that make Tanzanite special and rare. It has a remarkable strong trichroism, appearing alternately blue, violet and burgundy depending on crystal orientation.
The name of "Tanzanite" was given by Tiffany&Co to the gemstone in 1968. The scientific name of "blue-violet zoisite" was not thought to be consumer friendly enough by Tiffany's marketing department, and inspired with its origin country Tanzania they introduced it to the market as Tanzanite. In 2002, the American Gem Trade Association choose Tanzanite as a December Birthstone next to Zircon and Turquoise.
An independent study from 2012 suggests, as its rareness and the small mine area where it can be found, Tanzanite deposits may deplete in 30 years.
