Marta Sanchez, is a jeweler and gemologist, born in Vic (Barcelona, Spain) from a working family. She remember drawing and playing with clay, walking through the forest with her grandfather who teach her also to tie her shoes and fix a light switch. Her mother would always tell the story of how she only needed a pencil and paper to entertain her, or to let Marta get dirty making figurines with clay. They still conserve a mural she made with plaster on one of the walls of the house with only two years old!

Marta grew up spending a lot of time after school in her father's wood shop, making wood toys and furniture, which would help her get her hands accustomed to working and controlling machines. At age 18 Marta knew she wanted to make jewelry, and enrolled in Escola Massana at Barcelona, where she learned about metals, forging, micro fusion, stones, galleries and everything related to a jeweler.

Fascinated with stones, Marta decided to study Gemology to go to Germany to study Cut stones. Although she never got to leave to Germany, she speaks the language fluently, and earned Gemologist titles from the University of Barcelona, and the FEEG (Federation for European Education in Gemmology).

"I used to play with my sister as a child. I though I would become a veterinarian because I love animals! At home we had cats, turtles, hamsters, fish and a parrot. My sister used to collect minerals and used to read every book about ancient Egypt she could get her hands into. Now, when I look back I smile; my sister is studying medicine and I am a gemologist. Life takes many turns."

Marta conceives jewelry as ornamental objects for the body. "A jewel is something we wear to beautify our body. As someone who gets a tattoo, changes their hair or gets a piercing, I change my jewelry every day depending on my mood. I like to wear my jewelry as much as I like to show off my tattoos."

Marta lives and works in Barcelona, in her own studio and showroom. Also she started her blog on August 2006, a contemporary jewelry site called 18k, it has evolved into a meeting place for jewelers around the world.

Ara miro enrere i somric.

My hands...

I’ve always been making things with my hands. When I was a child I spent a lot of hours drawing and painting. My mother always tells the story of how she only needed a pencil and paper to entertain me. She used to let me get dirty making figurines with clay.

At present, I still work with my hands modeling wax and forging metals to create my jewels. Sometimes a collection emerges from a trip, other times from a story I have read, or even from a dream I have had, but most times I feel that there is someone whispering and guiding my hands into a jewel.
